It is not an exaggeration to suggest the goal tally should have entered double figures. But there are only two as Real Madrid and Atletico shared the points at the Bernabeu.
Selecting Lassana Diarra at right-back, Juande Ramos sprung a major surprise, while leaving Gonzalo Higuain on the bench. Atletico had lined up as expected with Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero together up front.
First Half
Frantic night was expected at the Bernabeu as Real Madrid’s biggest clubs clashed with over one eye on events in Barcelona as well. The two sides took their time to get settled. Madrid may have been behind, but Atletico started the second half the brighter, bombing forward at ever opportunity as the home side continued to leave bigger holes at the back. With just 5 minutes of the second period over, another counter attack gradually found its way to Maxi, but he lost the ball just as he was preparing to increase lead of the visitors.
